Till Halbach was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. He received the Diplom-Ingenieur degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering/Communications from Aachen University of Technology (RWTH), Germany, in 1998.
Between 1999 and 2004, he studied and worked as a PhD student at the Department of Telecommunications of Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Between 1999 and 2001 he visited the Chair and Institute of Communications Engineering at RWTH three times as a guest scientist. He was also with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University in Pullman for the duration of 6 months in 2002/2003. From October 2004 through May 2007, Till Halbach worked at Opera Software, first as an engineer for quality assurance and core technology, and later as a project and test manager.
He is a research scientist at the Norwegian Computing Center since June 2007.
His research interests include video and still-image compression and communication, with the main focus on robust communications and error-tolerant signal processing. Other interests include web standards and graphics, and scalable, fluid, useable, and accessible web design.
